whenever i think about how the house elves subplot was handled on harry potter i almost can’t believe it was real. like yeah yeah it’s joanne we all know how she’s like, but still. just thinking back to how dobby was introduced and how plainly his enslavement was presented as a horrible thing and how harry found it so bad he pulled up a trick to free him, and then she followed all that up with ‘oh no don’t worry. dobby was actually a weirdo among his race for not wanting to be a slave. they are all actually super cool with it and everyone who wants to argue for their rights like hermione does is virtue signaling and doing something useless and almost offensive that goes against what the elves want and were made for, which is slavery (they’re cool with it). hope that helps :)’

i can only think of this: she introduced dobby the way she did (as a victim and someone who definitely did not want to be a slave) without really thinking through the implications his character brought to that world, mainly just wanting to use him as another way of reinforcing that the malfoys were bad. then people actually read it and stopped to think about that and were like 'wait. so the wizards enslaved an entire race of sentient beings? and everyone’s cool with it?’ and were horrified by that, but since she clearly did not want to deal with the consequences of introducing this plot point that painted the whole wizard society in a bad light (not just the designated villains), she just tried to handwave it as 'well actually they are magical beings who are really into manual labor and love being ordered about and serving their masters so it’s all fine :))’, retconned dobby to be the odd one out of his people for daring not enjoying being a slave, and made hermione into a sjw strawman for everyone who might have a problem with that concept, just so we could see how 'silly’ her worries were. and, of course, she kept doubling down on that with each new book, refusing to change or take the criticism until the very end.

this new club drug the kids are calling "predatory wasp", hit or pass?

Catch me in “da club” feeling a complex blend of nostalgia, ennui, and the echoes of half-forgotten lusts

Before the internet, librarians were the gatekeeper of knowledge. For your reading pleasure, the New York Public Library released a cache of queries and conundrums called in from the 1940s to the 1980s.
